Artisan’s New Office: Indianapolis

3/16/2009 9:34 AM By

We are very excited to
announce the launch of Artisan’s new office in Indianapolis! We are thrilled to have a new
presence in America's
fastest capital city. Sure Indy is the home of the legendary Indy 500 but
lesser known facts about Indy are that it’s the third largest city in the Midwest and a growing mecca of design. And it’s no
wonder Indy’s experienced such a popularity contest—CNN recently awarded Indianapolis the coveted title of America’s Most Affordable
City.

Artisan is proud to offer
our creative staffing and placement services to the host of Fortune 500
companies, top agencies, and design firms rooted in this Midwest
region. We are proud to be growing in our ability to continue to assist the
creative community. Rachel Grimm from the Chicago
office transitioned her role to start-up this exciting division of Artisan.
Rachel’s been with Artisan for nearly five years and is ready to tell you about
the new contacts she’s landed in this thriving metropolis.

Will you be attending this year's Postcards from the Edge benefit? This charity recognizes and promotes AIDS awareness while assisting artists and the community. Postcards from the Edge features postcard-sized artwork created by established and emerging artists. Artisan's talent representative from the New York office, Christina Mazurowski, will be there along with her postcard available for purchase. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the work of Visual AIDS. We are proud to support Christina's participation in this event and wish both Christina and the event much success. Details about the event can be found on the Visual AIDS website.

AIGA: Weathering the Storm

12/26/2008 1:12 PM By

Recently, the AIGA sponsored a webinar entitled, “Good Advice for Bad Times.” This webinar was led by Shel Perkins, of Shel Perkins & Associates. While the main purpose of the online conference provided designers insights into how to weather the economy as principals of design firms, the webinar gave great insights into designers looking to market themselves in today’s economy.

One of the most interesting things Shel talked about was not lowering one’s hourly rate just because budgets are tight. Shel talked instead about adjusting the scope of work rather than nickel-and-diming your hourly rate.

Another topic Shel discussed was setting up contracts with your clients to protect yourself and I wondered: with such competition especially for gigs in the print arena are contracts really suitable for designers representing themselves? I’m not talking about principals of design firms, by all means they should have contracts, but as an individual graphic designer do you feel like contracts make you more appealing to your clients or less? To get a gig would you shelve a contract you typically would present to your prospective clients?

MTGB: Pete Nawara Paints

“The Match that Gives Back” party was a huge success. Not only were the winners of the design contest announced, but graphic designers from across the city had the opportunity to mix with extremely prominent members of the design community. Hiring managers from such esteemed corporations such as Motorola mixed and mingled with the crowd. All this happened while fine artist Pete Nawara provided fine art entertainment.

Over 200 freelancers, clients, representatives from the selected nonprofits, and judges munched on bacon-wrapped dates and spring rolls while Nick Gerber from Orange2 Photography and Brenda Moore from Columbia College graciously captured our evening. Psymbolic provided visual and audio entertainment while Pete painted. At the beginning Pete stood before a blank canvas and at the end of the party his portrait revealed his end piece: two beautiful children. Pete's passion and talent added amazing energy to our evening and we were very fortunate to have his participation. Thanks, Pete!

ABS Graphics Added $5,000 To The Award

11/12/2008 10:47 AM By

ABS Graphics is a Chicago-area company that has decided to contribute an additional $5,000 toward printing costs for the winning non-profit organization! This company has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Artisan, and has stepped up to support the "Match That Gives Back" creative competition with their generous donation.

Serving the area for over 30 years, ABS Graphics is an integrated marketing, communications and print media company that has designed many award-winning brochures, annual reports and magazines. Their many areas of expertise include direct mail and marketing collateral, among other things, and they have spearheaded projects for various clients large and small.

Again, the donation by ABS Graphics helps to underscore how having good connections in the industry can be beneficial. Artisan has worked hard to earn their reputation, and the formation of long-term relationships is something that can't be underestimated when it comes to business. We'd like to send out our sincere thanks to ABS Graphics for their generous donation and continued support.

MTGB: The Winners are Announced!

11/12/2008 7:51 AM By

We did it—Artisan not only threw a smashing party but our “Match that Gives Back” ultimately contributed $25,000 to an outstanding charity: Snow City Arts. This amazing charity provides artistic outreach to hospitalized children who due to their hospitalization are lacking access to school and art programs. The program stays with the children through their return home—it truly is a program that instills a love of expression through the arts.

Art director and graphic designer David Weik of Studio VIK was announced the winner of a $25,000 project benefiting Snow City Arts. The winners were announced on stage in front of over 200 influential guests of our party.

Artisan’s team members were overjoyed to witness such an amazing act of generosity and we thank our founder, Bejan Douraghy, for the outstanding contribution to not only the creative community, but the nonprofit community as well.

Amazing Artistry: Live!

10/20/2008 7:30 PM By

We are so excited about our "Match that Gives Back" 20th Anniversary Benefit! We aren't going to give everything away, but we would like to tell you a little about one of our highlights for the evening: award-winning artist Pete Nawara.

Pete is an amazing painter who will be joining us to create artwork during the course of the evening. You'll be invited to sip our signature cocktail and watch as the night unfolds before your eyes, bit by bit. You can read more about our event here: http://www.artisantalent.com/match-that-gives-back/

Nawara's educational background includes graphic design as well as fine art, and he is a graduate of Parsons School of Design in Paris, France. It isn't every day you get to experience a true artist at work–but then–this isn't exactly an "everyday" event either. It's our 20th year of serving in the industry, and we've made every effort to be sure it is an evening to remember.

Building Relationships: Columbia College Chicago

10/17/2008 6:45 PM By

You may have noticed that one of our esteemed judges of the "Match that Gives Back" competition is Eliza Nichols, PhD, Dean of the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Columbia College Chicago. This isn't a coincidence. Artisan has always believed in investing themselves in the local community and in supporting and nurturing new talent in the field. Our relationship with Columbia College is one example of how we have chosen to go about this process. You can learn more about Columbia College here: http://www.colum.edu/

So how exactly is Artisan involved with Columbia College Chicago? We set aside time to work with the students there to help them develop their portfolios. We also give them the opportunity to practice before being thrust into the job search by setting up some mock interviews. We are proud to share our time and expertise with these students and help them understand how they can apply the skills they have learned in school to the working world. We also try to share with them some information about what types of positions will be available to them after graduation.
