Something Cool’s Going On…
12/3/2008 9:32 AM By Sharon Potsch…with Columbia College. Three years ago I was introduced to Columbia College’s Portfolio Center, a hub of activity within the confines of this artistic college. Much more than a college resource center, the Portfolio Center hooks up graphic design, web design, and photography majors with writers, marketing, and public relations students to help create fully integrated portfolios and online sites for one another. In addition to portfolio development, Columbia’s Portfolio Center also offers industry-specific one-on-one meetings between professionals and students on an appointment basis. These 45-minute meetings provide students with a window into reality in the profession of their choice—whether it be questions about interview preparation or what life’s really like as a designer. All of these services and offerings are free to Columbia College students. Columbia College offers its students free use of its Portfolio Center. Not every student takes advantage of this great offering because not every student knows what it’s like to go to a design school where you’re shipped out into the world with zero preparation. What was it like for you? Did your school provide you help in navigating the world post-graduation?
Artists: Can We Help One Another?
12/2/2008 9:37 AM By Sharon PotschThe student collaboration going on at Columbia College is inspiring enough as to how we can all help one another better ourselves for a prosperous future but is it possible to weave this betterment into the professional design community? How can we all help one another during this time? Yeah, complaining about the bad job market is one thing—but can designers and writers take a cue from the students at Columbia College and help one another? What if writers looking for opportunities partnered up with designers who badly needed editing on their website? What if programmers offered to help graphic designers bone up on their HTML skills? Is this too idealistic? What do you think—can Artisan help make this possible? Tell us what you think Artisan or the design community itself can do to hook up designers, programmers, or writers willing to assist one another in their down-time.
Building Relationships: Columbia College Chicago
10/17/2008 6:45 PM By Catherine TYou may have noticed that one of our esteemed judges of the "Match that Gives Back" competition is Eliza Nichols, PhD, Dean of the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Columbia College Chicago. This isn't a coincidence. Artisan has always believed in investing themselves in the local community and in supporting and nurturing new talent in the field. Our relationship with Columbia College is one example of how we have chosen to go about this process. You can learn more about Columbia College here: http://www.colum.edu/
So how exactly is Artisan involved with Columbia College Chicago? We set aside time to work with the students there to help them develop their portfolios. We also give them the opportunity to practice before being thrust into the job search by setting up some mock interviews. We are proud to share our time and expertise with these students and help them understand how they can apply the skills they have learned in school to the working world. We also try to share with them some information about what types of positions will be available to them after graduation.
