How Can I Network If I’m Uncomfortable Talking to Strangers?

7/13/2009 12:18 PM By

Networking in person builds stronger ties than networking by phone or over the Internet, but many people also find it much more difficult. If you're someone who has trouble engaging in small talk with strangers, you're not alone! It may never come naturally for you, but with practice, you can get good enough that no one will notice you're working at it. There's no need to practice clever opening lines. Many people will respond to a sincere "Hello," but you can engage them early by asking an open-ended question — that's a question that seeks a story rather than a "yes" or "no" — about something going on in the situation — the group, the guest speaker, something going on in the news or weather that day, or something you can observe about the person (reading a name tag, perhaps). Hold eye contact while you listen carefully to the answer, keeping your body language relaxed and receptive. Keep your response brief, focusing on common ground. If the person seems interested in your work, it's OK to talk about it, but be sure the conversation isn't all about you from that point forward. After a short conversation, offer your business card and move on, unless it's clear that you and this person have immediate business to transact. You can follow up later with an e-mail or phone call. You may find it helpful to practice business networking conversations with friends in a comfortable setting so that you have a few "stock lines" that you can deliver easily.

Your Twitter Bio

6/26/2009 11:29 AM By

Your Twitter bio is more important than you may think. Many people decide whether or not to follow someone based on the bio they read. According to HubSpot, those with a great bio can get up to 8 times as many followers. If you want to put your best foot forward, be sure to word yours carefully. Consider the following before putting the bio together:

  • Remember that you only have 160 characters.
  • Think about what you want to communicate to those who find you on Twitter.
  • Consider various keywords that you can use to get your message across without being "wordy".
  • Think punchy. You don't have to use complete sentences. Web 2.0 social networking has more flexible rules when it comes to this kind of thing.
  • Put the most important information first–people may only get through a bit of what you write before they decide if they want to follow you.
  • See what other people in your field are doing. There is nothing wrong with basing your bio off of one that you like.
  • Remember that you can change it. If you feel like your bio isn't doing the job for you, switch it up.

Your Twitter bio is one of the first things people read about you. Make sure yours is communicating what's most important by taking the time to craft it well.
