New York Continues as a Mecca for Interactive Jobs

8/4/2011 12:30 PM By

The market for high tech jobs in New York, formerly strong even during the recession, continues to be active and thriving. While the city’s unemployment rate remained at 8.6 percent in May 2011, hiring in financial services, health care and education slowed.

However, the market for full time interactive jobs in New York remains positive. Employers are posting many new marketing and advertising jobs for freelancers and full time employees. The online community is an oasis for marketing and advertising interactive opportunities.

As noted, hiring for non-high tech positions slowed in May, but freelance digital design and marketing opportunities continued. The demand for graphic artists and designers has been particularly strong in the first half of 2011. While there appears to be no overriding single reason for this growth, the New York graphic designer market remained active even during the depths of the recession.

Interestingly, the non-profit sectors have become excellent sources of interactive designer professionals. Recently, motion graphics designers and digital animators have been enjoying a resurgence of demand with even full time jobs increasing.

Always in demand, talented marketing copywriters should see additions to their portfolios and bank accounts with numerous opportunities in the New York City-metro area. Not wanting the digital community to collect all the talented professionals, the print industry is using the season to ramp up with new jobs for art directors, print designers and graphic designers with both digital and print experience.

As usual, New York, along with Los Angeles, continues to lead the U.S. in interactive design jobs with companies in the entertainment and other related industries. For example, Disney Interactive, with a strong presence in New York City, has been hiring for talented freelance and full time positions throughout the year so far.

The many news agencies, video production firms and web content providers are a lucrative source of contract and full time interactive jobs in New York. According to observers and the Bureau of Labor Statistics alike, this demand should continue throughout the year and could last until 2014.

Give Your Website an Edge to Find More New York Freelance Opportunities

5/11/2011 9:02 AM By

Most people consider New York City a cutting-edge location for many reasons. Combine these reasons with the inherent need for successful freelancers to vigorously separate themselves from the “madding crowd” of competitors. As New York freelance opportunities multiply with the post-recession economy, this need for more cutting-edge marketing and networking becomes greater.

As creative jobs New York increase, the competition among creative freelancers also continues to grow. Superior New York freelance recruiters are at the front edge of this growth, offering many new opportunities. However, like employers, they also seek the most exceptional creative freelancers to match with their clients.

In this environment, a freelancer’s website is more important than ever. There is growing support for the theory that New York-based freelancers should create cutting-edge websites for themselves. This is no time for conservatism or timidity. Top creative freelancers must be viewed as leaders in their specialties.

Good reasons for this recommendation abound. Consider just a few factors.

  • New York-based freelancers are at ground zero for cutting-edge mentality. Even if your clientele is primarily conservative, your site can be daringly edgy.
  • Ironically, the most edgy websites typically create more trust and credibility for freelancers. Clients tend to view your website as an expression of your persona. Progressive sites do not typically “scare” potential clients, even the most conservative.
  • Web and graphic designers should create gourmet websites that showcase their talent, even when compared to competitor sites. New York freelance positions are highly competitive. Create modern, strongly targeted, multi-media websites that show off your expertise.
  • Even some “flash” is acceptable. No, not 1990s flash. Contemporary multi-media features, beyond teenage appetites, of course, can help establish your talent and credibility. Without straining resources, you can add some flash to enhance your cutting-edge website goal.

Spend the time to increase the edge to your website. The New York market will view your creative freelancing talents in a more exciting and favorable light. This gives you better entrees into the growing New York freelance opportunities now available.

4/28/2011 1:37 PM By

New York City has maintained its strong high tech industry employment, as it has for most of the 21st century. Cybercities 2010, which names the top 10 cybercities each year, continues to find NYC at the apex of the list.

Any premier New York City talent agency like Artisan can confirm that the volume of high tech opportunities is growing as the U.S. recovery finally takes hold. While New York City employment agencies seldom witness the high concentration of high tech workers enjoyed by San Jose/Silicon Valley (almost 30 percent of all private sector staff), these agencies can testify to the continuing strength of the market.

While New York City high tech jobs suffered during the recession, their consistently competing cybercities (Washington, D.C., San Jose/Silicon Valley, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle) often fared worse. New York freelance firms are reporting material spikes in new employment opportunities.

As Josh James of the TechAmerica Foundation correctly states, “These are the types of jobs every city wants. They are very well-paid . . .” Tech industry wages remain around 50 percent higher than other average private sector jobs. In 2009, the New York City metro area employed around 317,000 high tech professionals, more than than 24,000 employees higher than 2nd place Washington, D.C.

Whether you seek full-time or freelance employment, the New York City market is once again leading the nation in opportunities. Take advantage of an expanding market for the first time in a few years. Use all of your personal resources and the top creative talent employment firms in  like Artisan to find the full-time or contract job that is perfect for you.

Inspiration for Upscale Web Design in NYC

3/11/2011 2:38 PM By

As the recession moves to America’s rear-view mirror, the New York City employment agencies are beginning to experience a reawakening of job activity. Top New York talent agencies like Artisan are welcoming many new clients and opportunities in 2011.

A particularly elevated need for accomplished web designers is generating new inspiration for technology freelancers and job candidates. Examples of this renewed confidence by businesses abound. For instance, the e-mail marketing and communications firm, Emma®, among the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest growing private companies, recently opened their fourth satellite office in NYC and hired their 100th employee.

The inspiration and attitude of employers is critical to this resurgence. NYC employment agencies are discovering that web designers, both junior and senior, are generating broad interest and demand. While there seem to be more freelance than full-time opportunities, this is probably just a reflection of the focus of employer confidence.

After sitting on the sidelines during the recession, employers are finally feeling confident in short-term economic prospects. The downside of this resurgence is the apparent remaining lack of total confidence in the long-term strength of the recovery. However, technology freelancers should revel in the recovery of the New York City market.

With the numbers of temp workers increasing by 25 percent in late 2010 (American Staffing Association), technology professionals looking to the NYC market for contract jobs will find many new, exciting opportunities. For those seeking full-time employment, New York City remains a technological opportunity mecca, even with the apparent lack of long-term confidence of hiring managers.

New York: Top Of The Rock

6/23/2009 4:39 PM By

Perspective can be changed, depending on the view. If you want to see things differently, head over to the "Top of the Rock" at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. This observation deck may not be the highest in the United States at 70 stories, but the view is tremendous. Experience 360 degree views of New York that include landmark buildings as well as Central Park. There is no time limit, so you can spend as long as you like looking out over the city in search of inspiration.

Shapes and angles are a little different when you are 850 feet in the air, a fact which can help you come up with new directions for design elements. The observation deck actually has three different levels, and the total surface area is 55,000 square feet, so there is plenty of space to roam around. The very top deck is open air, which can have a real impact on how you view the city. There are plenty of big-city observation decks around, but this one is a gem. Take advantage of it and spark some new ideas.

New York: Chinatown

Chinatown can be an amazing source of inspiration for Web designers and writers alike. The colors, the energy, and the totally unique look of this New York neighborhood make it a wonderful place to visit for new ideas or those with an Asian theme. With a population of somewhere between 70,000 and 150,000 people, New York's is the largest Chinatown in the United States. Here, you will find winding streets peppered liberally with a staggering selection of restaurants, markets, and shops.

Be sure to find some of the Chinese and Buddhist temples in the area and check out places such as Confucius Plaza and Chatham Square as well if you have the time. Find some of the markets by looking on streets such as Canal, Mott, Pell, and Doyers, and immerse yourself in a world that is sure to give rise to more than a few new thoughts and unusual perspectives. Take a look at the goods there and let them spark your imagination. After spending an afternoon in Chinatown, you will be filled with new ideas to take with you to the computer.

New York: The New York Aquarium

6/17/2009 8:36 AM By

There is something otherworldly about creatures that live in the water, and this can serve as a source of inspiration. The way that things move, look, and act underwater is very different from the way that things manifest themselves on land. For this reason, the New York Aquarium is a great spot to check out if you are looking to see things in a different way. Sharks, stingrays, and seals (oh my!) are all available to serve as a basis for your next new idea.

Think about what type of design you are trying to create and then observe whatever you feel drawn to; there is plenty to take in here. The otters are great for communicating energy and playfulness, the sea lion demonstrations are fascinating and the large tanks can be very soothing. Shapes and colors can serve as inspiration as well. Just think about how unusual an octopus or a seahorse looks and let it take you to a new way of thinking about design. The exhibits feature over 8,000 animals, so you could spend the entire day there and still not see everything the aquarium has to offer. It is open 365 days a year, so you can go whenever it is most convenient for your schedule.

New York: Upscale Window Shopping

6/12/2009 8:35 AM By

Sometimes simple observation can really be a great help when you are looking to convey a particular feel through the written word or Web design. If your client is asking for a "high-end" or "upscale" Web presence, New York's Madison Avenue can lend a hand. Spend the day window shopping at stores such as Armani, Prada and Yves St. Laurent and get a feel for the good life and all that goes with it.If you tire of the fare here you can always head on over to 5th Avenue, which is just one street over; the choices there are just as posh. You'll see Tiffany & Co., Gucci, and Fendi there as well as many other famous names. Take the time to observe the arrangement of things in the stores and in their windows. Look at how the people are dressed. Listen to what they talk about. By the time you leave, you'll be able to pull together a Website that would fit right in.

New York: St. Patrick’s Cathedral

5/22/2009 10:32 AM By

If you're looking for inspiration, give St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City a try. This stunning landmark has giant, sweeping arches and ornate decorations everywhere. The building is over 150 years old and is still an imposing figure, even with all of the skyscrapers and other landmarks that compete for attention in the city. The stained glass, impressive construction, and reverent atmosphere are all sure to impress. Many elements of this building contain seeds that will germinate into ideas of your own.

If you want to drink in all that you can, attend one of the concerts that are held at the cathedral. This will immerse you in the sights and sounds of the place, and perhaps provide you with a little something extra that will serve as the creative impulse for your next new idea. If you have some friends in the city who might be interested, you might even consider booking your own tour, which are done by appointment for groups of ten or more. If not, just stop by and give this glorious building a chance to speak to you. It just might happen.
