Learning Photoshop Basics
1/28/2008 11:44 AM By ArtisanWhether you are a freelance designer or another type of creative, knowing Photoshop is a must these days. Many employers in the field want new hires to have at least a basic understanding of this program, and it really is helpful to have some basic program skills, even outside of the professional realm. There are several different ways you can learn:
- Take a class. Many community colleges offer courses in basic Photoshop.
- Get a tutor. Do you know someone who can teach you the ropes? Perhaps you can help someone you know learn a skill you are adept at in return for some tutoring in Photoshop.
- Read a book. There are a ton of Photoshop books out there. Go to the library and flip through them to find one that works for your skill level.
- Do a Web-based tutorial. There are many of these out there as well–and seeing things hands-on can be really be helpful.
- Play around. If you have a copy of Photoshop, you can also try just spending some time with the program. Often you can pick up some of the basics by just playing around.
It doesn't matter what type of job you hold, if you are in a creative field, a few Photoshop skills will serve you well. Take a little time to get up to speed; you'll be glad that you did.
A Production Artist’s Education
1/8/2008 10:25 AM By ArtisanProduction artists do not need to have four-year degrees — often, a two-year degree from a career-oriented graphic arts program is sufficient to get you started finding work as a freelancer.
Sometimes, an artist who aspires to fine-art or graphic design work will take jobs as a full-time or freelance production artist while completing a four-year degree. This can be a useful way to get to know how art departments and advertising agencies work.
By far the most important part of a production artist's education is learning production software — not just the basics, but the shortcuts that will help you get more work done quickly. Get as much hands-on experience as possible while studying, by taking classes, doing internships, and investing in lower-priced "education" versions of popular programs such as QuarkXpress, Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign.
